If Odysseus was in modern times I think he would be considered a hero in some ways, because he has a loving devoting wife at home that is very loyal but at the same time he is off having an affair with Circe on an Island. In todays Society that is frowned upon because its immoral. An addition to that Odysseus is very fickle and at one moment he is crying for his friends that have passed but in the next moment he is having sex with another women and again in todays society the people want some one that can make up there mind and stick to a idea or emotion.
If odysseus was in modern times some people would think that he would be a fit hero for the people because he is able to think on his toes and devise a plan to get him and his crew out of danger for example when they are stuck in the cave with the cyclops. Another time that people would call heroic is when he goes back for his two men that are on the island with the lotus eaters, he saved them, because one doesnt know what the lotus eaters would have done to them. so in some ways the people would think that he is a hero but in some ways people would think that he is not a hero. It really depends on how one looks at it.

I think a modern day hero is usually very close to perfect. Usually the hero always saves the day and overcoming obstacles. Modern heroes are usually people to look up to. Odysseus IS very smart and tactful, but he is also doing many things that most people do frown upon, as you said. Odysseus is not loyal to his wife and I don't consider him a hero. Alos many people consider a hero someone who saves people and is the savior. All Odysseus did was get home!!
I think odysseus portrays a real hero: he's not perfect, no one is, but he knows what has to be done and tries his best to do it. He is the perfect example of the modern day hero because he has flaws like regular people everywhere.

yeah, nobody's perfect. but i think that people's standards are way too high.
of course, i agree that he is somewhat a hero..i do not think that everyone would accept him as one.
